Traditional džezva with hot coffee

Saliguz

A forgotten Balkan ritual of coffee, love and intention

The Tradition of Saliguz

Saliguz is a ceremonial ritual in which water is poured down the back and collected below, symbolizing purification, balance, and renewal. The ritual is traditionally performed in silence by young woman and guided by elder women.

The flowing water represents the passage of energy, while the vessel beneath symbolizes containment and intention. The ritual is deeply rooted in folklore and cultural memory.

Saliguz ritual scene

The woman depicted in the image was born with a unique physical trait — her left arm is naturally stronger and shaped differently, allowing it to bend in ways uncommon to most people. In folklore, such differences were often seen not as flaws, but as signs of spiritual distinction or special purpose.
